      Worst In Series?

A little while ago I made a thread listing people's highlight games from different franchises and series, of which they'd recommend others to try out above the rest, or ordered in which games to play first to get the best experience. https://www.animeleague.net/forum/sh...Best-In-Series

As expected, these lists are dedicated to those games that you may feel were the worst the series had to offer. They may not be terrible games, they might just be nowhere near as good as the rest of the series (Donkey Kong Country 3 comes to mind, which wasn't overly bad, but it was never going to top the first two DKCs). They could be the worst because they changed something that the series was famous for. Then again, the game might have been so bad it could've or actually put you off the rest of the series. List your gaming woes here!

A couple of my own that rustled my pixels...

      - Dynasty Warriors 6 (removed most moves and weapons for the sake of boosting graphics, which made it almost unplayable with the repetitive nature)
      - King Of Fighters XII (Another that focused on graphics overhaul and forgot to put a story or any competitive play into the game)
      - Aliens: Colonial Marines (Any scares that could've been present went out the window with the framerate, and the A.I was terrible. Maybe with it being a typo there's hope for this?)
      - Sonic & The Secret Rings (Even before the nightmare that was Sonic Unleashed and Sonic 2006 being a thing... a Sonic game where you can't move Sonic?)

      Re: Worst In Series?

Dragon age II. Not a bad story, but the gameplay was so far from its predecessor that they can barely be considered related. (Inquisition was only a moderate improvement in my opinion; the original dwarfs both)

And because I'm turning into a grumpy old man entirely too early: any FF game after X. I know XV was well received, but sorry, the series just hasn't been the same since the Square Enix merger (none of their games have been)

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment was easily the worst in that series (though still not a terrible way to kill a weekend)

FF Tacics A2 was also pretty terrible when compared to the rest of the series (it was all downhill after the original)

      Re: Worst In Series?

      Out of all I've played:

Neptunia: Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1. I hated the changes they made to the story.
Sonic: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Master System). possibly the only Master System Sonic game I'll never touch again.
Mario Kart: MK Wii. Bikes were unnecessary. MKDS was the last I enjoyed
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. None of the DS games should have ever existed as they are.
Sword Art Online: Lost Song. Too small a world, too little to do post-game.
Pokemon: Generation 7 as a whole. Island trials was a terrible change to the franchise...

      Re: Worst In Series?

I forget about the spinoff games on portable and older consoles, yes Sonic suffered terribly on the Master System and Game Gear. Kept wanting to give them a try as they were new levels mostly, but the difficulty was ramped up on top of unresponsive controls. Zelda didn't age well on later portables either, as the home console 3D series took over. Pokemon I'm 50/50 on. I strayed from the main series and enjoyed the Stadium/ Coliseum types instead, so the art style and extra challenges didn't effect too much.

I will agree with FF as well. Loved FFXV for the story and gathering of four guys on the road together gameplay wise, but the series just seemed too far changed from the older titles, both in 3D and on handheld. I really couldn't get into the online ones after a while (XI and XIV) as they never seemed to have any ending or replayability to them. If Square ever did get the FFVII remake off the ground, I'd hope they'd remake post X games in the classic turn based style.

Some more annoyances of the fighting genre:

Virtua Fighter 5 (Killed the series outright due to... not really adding much content since 4. Seems they just ran out of steam).
Mortal Kombat Armageddon (I was going to say 4, but it at least had varieties in fatalities and the classic endurance modes. Armageddon's custom fatality was a mess, even if the karting mini-game was fun).
Dragonball Raging Blast (Burst Limit sacrificed a lot for graphics, but was a fair enough fighter with easy to pull off moves. Raging Blast pooped on the Tenkaichi formula restricting moves behind unlocks).
Street Fighter V (While better today as Arcade Edition, the non-complete release really put a downer on wanting to stick around for the game except for the occasional tournament).

      Re: Worst In Series?

-Donkey Kong Country: Returns and 1 are worse platformers than 3. Returns is easily the worst.
-Final Fantasy: II, VIII, XIII triumvirate of shit
-FFT: A2 is indeed the worst game in a middling srpg series
      -KoF: XII
-Street Fighter: 1, Alpha 1, IIING, IVAE, V
      -Dragon Quest: II
      -2D Mario: 2USA
      -Double Dragon: IV
      -Suikoden: IV
-Front Mission: Evolved, but ignoring that horseshit and focusing on the proper FMs (which are all good), III is the weakest
      Langrisser: Re:Incarnation Tensei
Shin Megami Tensei main series: IV or IVA
Persona: Q, 1 for the main games
      -Metal Slug: 4
-Twisted Metal: Black and I know I'm in the minority on this one. Gameplay may have been solid but the shitty edgelord reboot made me cringe inside-out. Give me the hamfisted bullshit of III over Black any day.
      -Konami TMNT: 1
      -Pokémon: XY, ORAS

      Re: Worst In Series?

I agree with you about Alien Colonial Marines, and I'm a massive Alien fan. There was just so much potential, but they just squandered it. Thank god for Alien Isolation! That showed us how an Alien game should be made!

      Some of mine;

Sonic 06 - I don't think this needs explaining. I do like Silver the Hedgehog, but such a shame he was introduced into a game that had so many problems.
Pokemon S/M - I know I'm a Pokemon nerd, but I found these games well...slightly boring. Compared to the brilliance of gen 1- 5, this was a let down.
Skylanders - Just what the hell did they do to Spyro? And then they dragged Crash into it as well!

      Re: Worst In Series?

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (great game, but still the worst in the series, in my opinion. Keep in mind that I started ES with Morrowind and haven't played the originals)

Fallout: 4. (Again, good game, but not as good as 3 or New Vegas. And again, I started this series at 3 and haven't played the originals)

UFC: any of the ones made by EA (shocker)

Battlefield: Hardline (Please, go back to the greatness of BF 3/Bad Company 2)

      Mass Effect: Andromeda

This thread has made me acutely aware of how long it has been since I've been intrigued enough by a game to look forward to its sequel. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm just not as entertained by games as I used to be. And this whole console generation has been a large disappointment, save for a select few titles

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories - Completely killed the battle system from the 1st game and replaced it with cards...plus the story was pointless.

I am sure there are others for me, but this one always bothered me the most.

urrghh you and me both hated the battle system in that game.

I would be so much happier Kingdom hearts was just 1, 2 and 3 and not given such a long-winded story.

As for worst in the series:

Sonic - secret of the rings (hated it so much as soon as i started playing)
Zelda - Phantom hourglass (that terrible ocean dungeon that you have to redo ruined the whole game)
Mario - any of the new super mario bros games (just unimaginative, generic and lazy design - everything that mario shouldn't be)

      Re: Worst In Series?

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen I. This is only due to its age when I played it. I was hooked by Soul Reaver, had fun playing BO II, and while the camera was absolutely infuriating, I loved the story in Defiance, so BO I gets the nod by default

Pokemon: Sun/Moon. I'm being an old man again here-- I'm only 29, I promise-- but the amount/type of pokemon seems to get more out of hand with each generation. A lot of them seem like pretty uninspired animations, especially compared to older generations

Final Fantasy I-X/earlier spin-offs: Crystal Defenders

Legend of Legaia: 2. Only two games to consider, but this could be the easiest decision of any series out there for me. The original could legitimately be ranked as one of the greatest RPGs of all time, even if it wasn't at the top of the list. Unfortunately, the sequel may very well be the most derivative sequel of all time

      Re: Worst In Series?

I couldn't personally stand Final Fantasy X or XIII - I thought the characters were weak, the storylines were poor at best, I didn't feel at ALL engaged with the game and the mechanics were just wank for want of a better term but that's just me

      Re: Worst In Series?

first thing that came to mind for me.

Grand Theft Auto 4, played it too serious and ruined the fun for me.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent, I enjoyed this game, but it was just a let down compared to the rest.

Hitman Absolution, of all the ones i played properly, this one went too action focused for my tastes. and all the assassination locations were way too small, glad they fixed it with Hitman.

Thank you so much Chibi Angel! <3
