Which group you are assigned is random. But it doesn't mean you won't be a pirate. You have a 1 in 3 chance to be a pirate. Once the game starts you'll know what your role and group is.

Perhaps, in the next game will try it without a Group Spy, and just let everyone join whichever group they want to be in. We'll still the numbers in each group to start evenly though. Then we could reduce the minimum number of players to 12.
