Re: Remember when Dreamworks did those Bible movies?

Prince of Egypt is my 4th favorite movie of all time. The cinematography, animation, voice-acting and the music combined were amazing. It's one of those lightning in a bottle movies where the right elements came together with the right stars, writers and the animators.

If any one thinks I'm just exaggerating, examine this scene:

Listen. Listen to the cries of hundreds awaking to the death of the firstborn. It resonates throughout the rest of the scene, echoing subtly in the background even during Moses and Ramses' conversation, haunting. The framing of Ramses as light sheds upon him and Moses, the tragic music settling in as Ramses finally releases the Hebrew slaves, Moses' subtle expression as he regrets over what he had to do to his own brother; every single detail in this scene is masterfully done, and that kind of quality holds up throughout the entire film.

There's just so much effort and love poured into the film's every aspect that I found myself thoroughly impressed. Did I mention the story? The epic tale of two brothers separated by fate and destiny; very epic Shakespearean stuff.

But aside from the above scene, my other favorite scene has to be the plagues:

The way the two brothers enunciate their pains and frustrations at each other through the lyrics like it's some stage play as God rains fire and locusts upon Egypt. Note the lyrics:

"Since you refuse to to free my people
all through the land of Egypt
      I send a pestilence, a plague
Into your house, into your bed

      I SEND THE SWARM
      I SEND THE HORDE
      THUS SAITH THE LORD!"

Honestly, the voice chanting that felt like a harbinger of vengeance announcing God's decree, that He shall "send a hail of burning ice on every field, on every town," it just chills me to the bone every time I hear it. Whoever wrote the lyrics in such a style was a genius. Very dramatic stuff that made the entire movie feels larger than life, the kind of epic proportions rarely found in animated films these days. These days, animated movies, especially those of Dreamworks, always have some talking animals making pop culture references to one another as they get into some hijinks. "The Prince of Egypt", on the other hand, has a grand story that played out over the lives of Moses and Ramses from their birth to their adulthood, cursed to be brothers and cursed to be torn apart as they decide the lives of their own people. That kind of exciting story that takes my breath away just from reading it is just rarely present anymore.

      Edit:
I wrote a review long ago back in 2016:
