Jakk, who's the person from AL that you've known the longest, and who do you know the best?

In terms of people who are still active on AL, I have known Mike/Freesaiyan/Ferefire the longest. For who I know the best, probably Rob/Black Mage. I've never met Robert in person, and I've very very rarely spoken to him on IM or other out-of-AL stuff. We've just posted a lot of the same threads, knew a lot of the same people, and agreed on a lot of opinions. In fact, I can recall that back in the day, I got sick of the AL staff going after my posts based on reputation alone, so I requested to be banned with the intent to come back on an alt and run incognito for awhile. The alias I chose was Doc Homer, and I played just a little more snooty and uptight than usual. That alt was made mod in something like a month, I think. Anyway, I was posting with that for maybe a week before I got a PM from Rob asking if it was me. I denied it, of course, but he recognized me right off the bat.

If Rob doesn't count as still active (he DID leave recently), then it would probably be Mike. I have (to my knowledge) never been on the same continent as him, and don't intend to ever meet him. But AL has been a huge part of his life over the last ten years, and I've been here to see it.

In terms of people who are no longer on AL, I have known Bubo the longest. Bubo was a close IRL friend of mine who joined shortly after launch in 2002, and stopped posting some time in 2003, if not sooner. We were in boy scouts together I think right up until we both graduated. And the person who I know best is Tessa or "Tessa Kitten" or whatever other names she used over the years. She was around in late 2002, and left at some point, and comes back every once in awhile but she's mostly moved on with her life. We internet dated for a few months in 2002, then met IRL and dated for a few months again in 2004. The distance didn't quite work, but we stayed close for awhile. Right before I started dating my wife, we were in talks for her to come and make a visit for a little no-strings-attached, cashing in on some fetishes we'd both talked about for years but never had the chance to try. Now that I'm married, we don't talk as much, but I still keep in casual facebook style contact with her. She has never met Tucker (my cat), but knows me well enough she basically knows him, and offered her condolences when she found out he died. In fact, at one point shortly before I started dating my wife, I recall Tessa saying that if she ever got to a place where she wanted to get married, she would want to marry a guy just like me (or me if possible). So, it doesn't really get much closer than that. I think most of the people she knew are long gone, so I doubt she'll ever make a comeback on AL. We've lost a lot of people along the way.

Why did your family moved from Hawaii to Oregon?

My mom grew up in Oregon. The west coast schools (especially the northwest) offer scholarships to kids who grew up in the pacific isles. This led to my mom being room mates with my dad's cousin at the University of Oregon. My parents divorced in about 1989, so my mom went back to Oregon with my siblings and I so the financial situation could be a bit more stable. Our dad had family and a career in Honolulu that he couldn't leave, so up until he retired he came over to Oregon to visit us during holidays, and we went back to Honolulu in the summers.

Best childhood memory?

Food stuff. In the Manoa Valley there was this Korean joint called O Bok (Oh Book, pronunciation), where they had a fantastic Korean BBQ'd pork. I will remember that flavor until the day I die. When I was a kid it was so spicy I had to down a whole glass of water every bite, but over the years my tolerance developed.

there's this place called "Hawaiian Times" in Eugene where they sell this "teriyaki chicken" that has no sauce and is dry as a fucking bone and the white owners have never been to Hawaii

Who's your favorite author?

That's actually a difficult question. I read more bad books than good books, because I enjoy picking apart stupid shit that for some reason sells really well. I especially enjoy bad novels by self-insert authors like Dan Brown. But books that are GOOD, that I actually LIKE, where I actually LIKE the author? Maybe Louis L'Amour, or Kurt Vonnegut. I've barely scraped the surface of their works, but they're both pretty great. Dickens I like too, obligated because we have the same birthday, but some of his stuff is hard to read because he was paid by the page.
